Pediatric Occupational Therapy Tips for the Home

During these challenging times, it may be difficult to keep children entertained. Here is a list of activities to have your child do at home to practice fine motor skills while learning and integrating skills from school and life. Some activities use things that are already around the house, and some you can purchase from a local dollar store, Wal-Mart, or Amazon. These activities can work on improving fine motor integration, visual motor integration, eye-hand coordination, visual spatial relations, figure-ground perception, manual dexterity, strengthening, and much more. If you have specific questions about what an activity works on, or what is beneficial to target with you child, please email me at allison@abptherapy.com.

1. Fine Motor Skills: Place round cereal/beads on long noodles such as spaghetti or linguine.

2. Sensory: Make a sensory box using dry rice, beans, pasta, or water beads. You can hide small toys in the box and have children try to find them with their eyes closed. You can also dye the rice or pasta different colors using food coloring.

3. Fine Motor Skills: Use tweezers to pick up small cotton balls, toys, or cereal and place in bin to practice hand strength and grasping skills.

4. Strength: Use a hole punch to place holes in paper. You can then have the child string a shoe string or other string through the holes.

5. Fine Motor Skills: Play a card or board game together.

6. Fine Motor Skills and Strength: Make different things out of play-doh.

7. Strength: Perform animal walks around the house such as bear walking, crab walking, and frog jumping.

8. Fine Motor Skills: Use a kitchen colander to place pipe cleaner through the holes.

9. Coordination: Place coins in a piggy bank.

10. Fine Motor Skills: Write the child’s name on paper and have them glue down objects tracing their name such as torn paper, beads, buttons, or stickers.

11. Strength: Use a spray bottle to spray the car, concrete, or flowers.
